All the Light We Cannot See: A Novel

Our PST book club read this and everyone loved it! The writing is eloquent, it shows that it was 10 years in development. My favorite book so far from the 6 years with PST book club!

Below Stairs: The Classic Kitchen Maid's Memoir That Inspired "Upstairs, Downstairs" and "Downton Abbey"
Date Posted: 6/10/2014 | Go To Book Page

Our June bookclub reviewed this book and all agreed it was interesting reading. The early part of her career was particularly interesting to our group - the matter-of-fact way of facing what we would see as a life of hardship surprised our group. The discussion questions regarding the lack of privacy for both the servants and the "masters" was thoughtful. The resulting TV series was definitely more upscale!

Our book club liked the idea of the book - the double voices, etc but all were very disappointed in the writing, feeling it was generally shallow and contrived.

Moloka'i
Date Posted: 7/25/2013 | Go To Book Page

The group that was here for the summer read Moloka'i and found it very interesting.  It did a great job of describing life on the leper colony, including many unknow details such as the impact of the bombing of Pearl Harbor.  We had some good discussion about the impact of isolation on the patients and their families - we also did some research on the current status/treatment for leprosy today.

Murder in Murray Hill (Gaslight Mystery)
Date Posted: 7/4/2014 | Go To Book Page

Three of us reviewed this book and agreed that it was better than many "series" books. Although definitely light summer reading and not destined to be a classic, there were themes explored that were still relevant today and made for good discussion - safety when seeking social connections, dominant personalities' influences on others, impact of "instant money" on peoples' lives, etc.

Book club was impressed with this book.  While not a life style we would choose, the characters took action that seemed believable to them.  It was very interesting to read about the emerging cultural changes this many years later.  Excellent book.

Round House, The: A Novel

Our summer group loved this book and highly recommends it.  We felt the story line was well developed, and led to much discussion on the important issues of Native American rights, the implication for tribal women and legal confusion in such cases.  All of us were very impressed with the characters in the book and the author's ability to stay so true to those characters throughout the book.

The Art of Racing in the Rain: A Novel
Date Posted: 6/10/2014 | Go To Book Page

This book got mixed reviews from our bookclub. We all agreed the idea of reading from the dog's perspective was very interesting and that beloved pets understand much more than we give credit for. However, the technical skill of the author was not a hit - a dog can know when to steal custody papers, but not understand that putting items in a box means moving? Overall, pet owners and racing fans will enjoy it, but don't expect the writing to captivate you.

This is a fabulous book that Julia recommended. My book club at PST loved it too. If you watch PBS "American Experience", there is an episode on this book. It's on Netflix if you miss it on PBS.

The group discussed this book at our February meeting and the concensus was that it was thoughtful and well written.  We are all surprised by the love she had for her father, even at the end of the book.  The author's relationship with her mother was one that we wanted to explore further.

Our book club enjoyed this book and had a lot of good discussion re the use of letters for the narrative. While the tone was often "light", we felt that kept it from being a repeat of other "horrors of WWII" books, and encouraged us to explore some of those horrors on a more personal level. We felt the description of shipping the children to London and the attempted rehab of Remy were more gripping when told through letters than they might have been as straight narration. We also thought the one-time letters from some islanders allowed the author to visit their stories without needing to follow their lives. Overall, a very good book for a month when we wanted something quicker/lighter to read, but still wanted good discussion about the themes addressed by the author.

The Light Between Oceans: A Novel

PST Book Club all enjoyed this book.  The characters were well portrayed in how they reacted to the ethical delimmas.  The ending was a bit trite, but did not spoil the overall experience of the book - just needed some editing.

What I Did: A Novel
Date Posted: 8/12/2014 | Go To Book Page

Our book club had really good discussion from the themes and issues raised by this book. While the "tension" in the book gave it a somewhat negative tone, we felt that the ending was very redemptive. Although the episode spiraled out of control, there was some discussion about whether that may have prevented a more serious explosion by the father at another time. Although some sections felt a bit contrived, the child's perspective was handled better than in attempts by other authors. We would recommend the book for a group looking for interesting discussion.

Another book from PST group. Although the subject matter is sad, it is not a sad book. I loved the them of living meaningfully until the very end. Overall, very inspirational. This one got Bob's vote too.
